Jemaa el-Fna in a nutshell

Jemaa el-Fna is a public square at the entrance to the medina of Marrakech. The souks begin just north of it and the Koutoubia Mosque stands to the west. Juice sellers are out in the morning, the crowd grows in the late afternoon, and in the evening the food stalls, music and storytelling circles take over. Jemaa el-Fna, Jamaรข El Fna and Djemaa el Fna are spellings of the same place.

This guide covers what you will want to plan: food tours and medina walks, the square at night, the souks, the Koutoubia, where to eat, safety and scams, history and UNESCO status, palaces and museums nearby, day trips from Marrakech, getting there, the best time to visit and riads close to the square. Prices are in Moroccan dirham (MAD) or euros, in 2026, and they change.

A few things to know before you go

The points that most often change plans.

Two separate UNESCO listings

The cultural space of Jemaa el-Fna was proclaimed in 2001 and entered on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008. The medina of Marrakech has been a World Heritage Site since 1985. These are two different entries.

History and UNESCO โ†’

The square is changing

The layout of the stalls is being reworked. A tender for new stalls was issued in September 2026, and road works at the edges of the square come and go. Look at what is open when you arrive and allow extra walking time.

What the square offers by time of day

Orientation, not a timetable. There are no official opening hours for the square.

MorningOrange juice sellers already at workA first look at the square
Late afternoonMore people and the first stalls being set upWatching the square fill
Sunset to about 11 p.m.Food stalls, music, storytellers and circles of onlookersDinner and the full atmosphere

For most first-time visitors, arriving around sunset gives both the set-up and the evening peak. The page on the square at night goes through the hours and the customs in more detail, and the food tour page shows what a guided tasting walk covers.

Beyond the square

Marrakech as a whole and the coast have their own guides.

This site stays with Jemaa el-Fna and the medina around it. For the rest of the city, including the gardens, the hammams and the airport, see the Marrakech guide. For a day on the Atlantic coast, Essaouira has its own site.

Jemaa el-Fna: frequently asked questions

Is it free to enter Jemaa el-Fna?

Yes. The square is public and you need no ticket to walk across it. You pay for tours, for tables on rooftop terraces and for what you eat or buy. Do not assume a guide is compulsory: the square can be visited without one.

What is the best time to go?

Late afternoon into the evening. The set-up starts around sunset or earlier, and the stalls and performances are at their busiest in the evening hours. See the page on the square at night and the best time to visit for the seasons.

Is Jemaa el-Fna safe?

Most visitors walk through without trouble, but take normal care. The US State Department rates Morocco at Level 2, exercise increased caution, in its advisory of 4 September 2026. The German Foreign Office warns of theft in tourist areas and medinas, including bags and phones snatched by moped riders. Keep valuables close and settle prices first. More on the safety page.

How do I get from the airport to the square?

By airport bus, taxi or a pre-booked transfer. The bus line to the square costs MAD 30 one way, but check the current timetable. Many riads sit in lanes where cars cannot reach the door, so expect a short walk at the end. See getting there.

Can I do a food tour on the square?

Yes. A 3-hour guided walk through the square and the nearby souks costs EUR 39, with tastings and a dinner on the square. Details are on the food tour page.

Is jemaaelfnaa.org the official website of Jemaa el-Fna?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not the website of the City of Marrakech, the Moroccan tourist office or UNESCO, and it has no connection to any tour operator, riad or hotel.
