Day trips from Marrakech: how far and how long

Most day trips leave in the morning and return in the evening. The Atlas valleys and the Agafay desert are the closest, Essaouira and the Ouzoud waterfalls need a long day, and Aït-Ben-Haddou is a full 12 hours. Drive times below are one way from Marrakech and are estimates. Traffic, weather, mountain road conditions and stops change them.

If you stay near the square, ask how pickup works. Many trips collect you from a hotel or riad that cars can reach, or from the nearest pickup point if your lane is too narrow. A start right at Jemaa el-Fna does not apply to every trip.

For most visitors with only one day to spare, the Ourika Valley or the Agafay desert is the easiest choice, and Essaouira suits anyone who wants to see the coast and does not mind a long drive.

Atlas Mountains and the Ourika Valley

The Ourika Valley is the standard short trip into the mountains. A group trip to Setti Fatma takes about 1 hour 15 minutes each way, and the valley itself is reached in about 1 hour, so the end point of your trip matters. Lunch is usually extra. Read more about the area on the Ourika Valley guide.

Imlil, at the foot of the High Atlas, takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. The example price of EUR 120 is for a private vehicle, not per person. A day in Imlil is not a Toubkal summit trip. If you plan a hike, go with a registered local guide and check the conditions on the day.

The Ourika Valley in the Atlas foothills

Agafay desert

The Agafay is a stony desert of low hills about 45 minutes from the city. It is not a Sahara landscape with sand dunes. Evening trips combine activities with a sunset and dinner. An evening programme with activities and dinner costs about EUR 35 or MAD 350 per person in 2026. Details and options are on the Agafay desert guide.

Ask what the price includes, since the same name can cover very different programmes.

Essaouira, Ouzoud and Aït-Ben-Haddou

Essaouira is a walled port city on the Atlantic, about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours from Marrakech. A group day trip costs about EUR 20 or MAD 200 per person, and lunch is extra. The day is long, so consider an overnight stay. The Marrakech to Essaouira guide covers bus, taxi and tour options.

The Ouzoud waterfalls take 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. A shared trip costs about EUR 23 per person. Do not assume entrance or boat fees are inside that price. Swimming rules and water conditions vary, so follow local signs and your guide.

Aït-Ben-Haddou and Ouarzazate need about 4 hours each way and make a day of around 12 hours. A group trip costs about EUR 30 or MAD 300 per person, with lunch extra.

What to check before you book

Prices and routes look similar until you read the details.

Pickup point

Hotels and riads that cars can reach are collected directly. If a car cannot enter your lane, you walk to the nearest pickup point. Confirm the meeting point and time the evening before.

Per person or per vehicle

Group trips quote a price per person. Private trips often quote a price per vehicle. Compare them on the same basis.

What is included

Lunch, entrance fees, boat rides, camel rides and dinner are often extra or bundled. Read the inclusions list before you pay.

Mountain safety

Germany's travel advice for Morocco recommends trekking in mountain areas as a group with a registered local guide and checking conditions on the day. A sold day trip does not show that every trail is safe, so ask your guide.
