Getting to Jemaa el-Fna

Jemaa el-Fna sits at the edge of the medina, but the last stretch to most riads is on foot. Here is how the airport bus, taxis and transfers compare, and where to get out.

Reaching the square from the airport

Marrakech-Menara airport (RAK) is the usual arrival point. From there you have three practical ways to reach Jemaa el-Fna: the airport bus, a taxi or a pre-arranged transfer. All of them end at the edge of the medina. The square itself is a pedestrian space, and the lanes around it are too narrow for most cars, so plan for a short walk at the end.

If you would rather not find your way alone on the first evening, a guided walk helps. Our page on guided medina tours shows what is on offer, and food tours are a relaxed way to learn the layout of the square and the souks. For flights and the terminal, see the Marrakech airport guide.

Bus, taxi and transfer in detail

What to expect and what to check.

The airport bus

The airport line is line 19. The single fare is MAD 30, and a return costs MAD 30 to 50 and can be valid for two weeks. A bus runs about every 20 to 30 minutes from roughly 6:20 a.m. to 10:50 p.m. The ride to Jemaa el-Fna takes around 12 minutes in normal traffic, and the whole route 25 to 35 minutes. The city bus network changed operator in December 2025. Check the current timetable, fare and stop at the airport before you rely on it.

Taxis

A daytime ride from the airport costs about MAD 70 to 150, and at night up to MAD 200. Agree the fare before you get in and say which gate or drop-off you want. A taxi can reach the edge of the medina but not every riad door.

Private transfers

A transfer is usually the easiest option with a late flight. Even a door-to-door booking ends with a short walk, because many riads sit in pedestrian lanes. Give the provider your riad's name and ask where you will be dropped.

Roadworks in 2026

Renovation is under way on the square and on some approach roads, including the link between the Mamounia area and Jemaa el-Fna. Allow extra time, and let the driver choose the best drop-off on the day.

The last walk to your riad

Most of the centre is pedestrian lanes, with some drivable streets.

AreaUsual access pointFinal walk
Mouassine and LaksourBab LaksourAbout 3 to 8 minutes
Bab Doukkala and Dar el BachaBab Doukkala, or the street towards Dar el BachaAbout 2 to 8 minutes
Kasbah, Mellah and El BadiBab Agnaou, Bab Ksiba or Place des FerblantiersAbout 1 to 5 minutes
Riad Zitoun and KennariaEdge of the square near the Koutoubia, or Place des FerblantiersAbout 3 to 10 minutes

These are rough times, and the real time depends on your address. One riad in Riad Zitoun, Riad Loulou Zitoun, gives about 600 m to the square, no direct car access and a last stretch on foot from Parking Riad Zitoun Jdid, around 100 m away. Parking fees vary, so ask your host.

Not every street in the medina is closed to vehicles. Some, such as the road from Bab Doukkala towards Dar el Bacha and parts of the Kasbah, are open to cars. Ask your riad whether it sends someone to meet you. If strangers offer to show you the way, politely decline and wait for your host. Carry your phone and bag on the side away from the road, as mopeds pass in the lanes.

Plan the rest of your trip

Where to go once you have arrived.

Day-trip providers collect you at hotels and riads they can reach. If your lane is too narrow for a vehicle, the pick-up moves to the nearest point, so ask your riad where that is.
