Choosing a riad near the square
A riad is a traditional house built around a courtyard, and many have been turned into small guesthouses. In the medina, they are tucked into lanes that cars cannot always enter. Which area you pick decides how you arrive, which sights are next door and how long you walk with your bags. Ask the riad for an exact address and a meeting point, and check the location on a map before you book.

Medina areas compared
Walking times are approximate and depend on the address.
| Area | Usual access | Final walk | Nearby |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riad Zitoun and Kennaria | Edge of the square near the Koutoubia, or Place des Ferblantiers | About 3 to 10 minutes | The square, Bahia Palace |
| Mouassine and Laksour | Bab Laksour | About 3 to 8 minutes | Le Jardin Secret, Musée de la Musique, Maison de la Photographie |
| Bab Doukkala | Bab Doukkala, or the road towards Dar el Bacha | About 2 to 8 minutes | Dar el Bacha direction |
| Kasbah and Mellah | Bab Agnaou, Bab Ksiba or Place des Ferblantiers | About 1 to 5 minutes | El Badi Palace, Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace |
Walking time to the square depends on the exact address, and the minutes above are for the last stretch from the gate, not for the whole way from the airport. A riad near a gate is easier on arrival day, while one deeper in the lanes can be harder to find after dark. Save the riad's phone number and the name of the nearest gate before you land.
For most first-time visitors who want to walk to the square in the evening, Riad Zitoun or Mouassine is the simplest base. The Kasbah suits travelers who plan to spend their days at the palaces and tombs. None of these areas comes with a guarantee of quiet rooms, so ask the riad about noise at night.

Questions to ask before you book
A short list that avoids surprises.
Where do I get out?
Ask for the exact gate or parking spot, and whether someone meets you there. Even a door-to-door transfer ends with a short walk.
What is the total price?
Ask whether local taxes such as the taxe de séjour are included in the rate. The amount differs by property, so confirm the final price in writing.
What about noise and late arrival?
Ask which rooms face the lane or the courtyard, and whether the riad can receive you after a late flight.
Who carries the luggage?
Ask whether the riad arranges a porter for the lanes, and agree on any cost before you arrive.
Plan the rest of your trip
After you choose a base.
